Community Engagement Hub

Work Focus Group

This is a Southern District Health Board Mental Health team initiative, which is set up to get people with mental health issues back into employment. Based at Kew Hospital it consists of SDHB case managers, occupational therapists, doctors, representatives from disability employment specialist agencies and Habitat for Humanity Invercargill. We work collaboratively to transition people back into the workforce as part of their rehabilitation treatment. We provide opportunities for people to integrate back into the workforce and society by way of volunteering in a supportive and caring environment. The results can be and have been life changing for those involved.

We collaborate to provide volunteering opportunities for unemployed people to gain or re-ignite lost skills needed to gain a job. The results have been very good with nearly every person that has been with us moving into paid employment. We also collaborate with a 10 week paid employment program to get long term unemployed back into the routine of having a job. We get people using skills they may have gained on a course into practical actions by mentoring with our staff and senior volunteers. This has been very successful.

Success with Recycling

We own and operate The Garage Reuse Shop, located at 303 Bond Street, Invercargill - just inside the gates of the Invercargill Waste Transfer Station. As part of our operation, we refurbish and repair electrical appliances such as washing machines, stoves/ovens, dryers, fridges, freezers etc. Any unuseable items are stripped down and recycled. After the higher valued parts are extracted, the clean carcases are processed in our on-site bailer/crusher. The processed bales are then sold onto a national scrap metal company. We also receive donations of old roofing iron and other metals, which are processed on site.

Workbridge is the largest New Zealand owned specialist employment agency for people with a disability or impairment. It is a Not for Profit organisation. We work together to provide opportunities for people to gain skills, confidence and experience in becoming "work ready". "Work ready" is a term used when a person has mastered all the requirements needed to gain long-term sustainable employment. We are proud to be part of assisting people to improve their lives and achieving their dreams.

We at Habitat for Humanity have created this “Housing Hub” to meet the recognised need in our community. To have a single place to come to find out what is available with regard to information and agencies: where agencies can attend once or twice a week to deal with enquiries about housing. A neutral place.
